      Why are Right to Rent checks needed?

      All tenants must have the legal right to rent in the UK. Landlords have a responsibility to prevent anyone without lawful immigration status from accessing the private rented sector.

      It is illegal to rent to anyone who does not have the right to rent. Any landlord found to have let their property to a person who does not have permission to rent in the UK will face civil penalties.
