What to do in the event of a water leak or burst pipe

For a major leak or burst pipe, turn off the water immediately at the main stopcock to stop flooding. For minor drops or dampness, contain the water and report it through the portal.

Step-by-Step Actions

For Major Emergencies (Burst Pipes, Severe Flooding)

  1. Shut Off the Main Water Supply: Locate your main stopcock (usually found under the kitchen sink, in a utility cupboard, or near the front entry) and turn it fully clockwise to shut off all incoming water.
  2. Protect Electrics: If water is leaking near any electrical outlets, sockets, or your fuse box, go to your consumer unit and switch off the main electrical power immediately.
  3. Contain the Flow: Place buckets or deep containers under the leak and use towels to absorb excess water to protect the floors and ceilings below.

For Minor, Localised Leaks (Taps & Pipes)

  • If a tap or pipe is dripping slowly, try tightening the pipe connections with an adjustable spanner. Avoid using that specific fixture until it is inspected.

For Toilet Cistern Leaks

  • If water is running constantly into the toilet bowl, try opening the tank lid and adjusting the float inside the cistern. If water is leaking from the base of the toilet, stop using it and submit a report.

For External Damp & Rainwater Leaks

  • If damp patches appear on walls or ceilings only during or after heavy rainfall, check the outside of the building for blocked or overflowing gutters and downpipes. Use buckets or towels to contain water seeping through window seals.

For Appliance Leaks

  • If water pools under your washing machine or dishwasher, check that the hose connections at the back are screwed on tightly and that the drain hose is fully inserted into the waste pipe wall outlet.
