What to check if your oven, hob, fridge, or washing machine stops working
Appliance issues are often caused by simple power trips, loose plugs, or blocked filters. Running a few quick checks can get your machine working again without waiting for an engineer.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
For Ovens & Hobs
- Check the Wall Switch: Verify that the main isolation switch on the wall (usually a large red switch) is fully turned on.
- Check the Fuse Box: If you have an electric oven or hob, check your property's main fuse box to ensure the circuit breaker hasn't tripped.
- Reset the Clock: If the oven light turns on but the unit will not heat up, check the digital display panel. Many modern ovens will not engage the heating element until the built-in clock has been set.
- Gas Ignitions: If your gas hob isn't clicking or sparking when you turn the dial, check if the burner caps are clean and sitting flat, or try lighting the ring manually with a match or lighter.
For Fridges & Freezers
- Power Check: Ensure the unit is firmly plugged into the wall socket and the power outlet is switched to the "On" position.
- Clear the Airflow: Make sure the back of the fridge isn't tightly packed with food. Blocking the internal air vents prevents cool air from circulating, causing the internal temperature to rise.
- Inspect the Thermostat & Seals: Check that the temperature dial hasn't been accidentally bumped or turned down. Clean the rubber door seals to make sure they are closing tightly and not letting cold air escape.
- Defrost Regularity: If you notice a thick layer of ice building up on the inside walls, empty the contents into cool bags and perform a complete manual defrost.
For Washing Machines & Dishwashers
- Check the Door Latch: Ensure the door or lid is completely shut and clicked securely into place, or the cycle will not start.
- Clear the Drain Filter: If your washing machine won't drain or open, lay a towel down on the floor, open the small access panel at the bottom front corner, and carefully unscrew the debris filter. Rinse away any trapped fluff, lint, coins, or small hairpins.
- Inspect the Hoses: Pull the appliance out slightly and inspect the water supply hoses and wastewater drain hoses at the back. Ensure they are straight, not kinked, and not crushed against the wall.
- Clean the Spray Arms (Dishwashers): If your dishes are coming out dirty, pull out the spinning spray arms and clear any food particles blocking the tiny water jets.
