How to troubleshoot boiler issues and low hot water pressure

If your heating or hot water isn't working, it is often due to low system pressure. You can usually resolve this yourself in a few minutes by checking the pressure gauge and using the filling loop to top it up to 1.5 bar.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Check the Boiler Power & Settings

  • Verify that the boiler is plugged in, switched on at the wall, and the digital display screen is active.
  • If an error code is showing, look up its meaning in your digital manual. You can try holding down the Reset button for 3 to 5 seconds to restart the system.

2. Re-Pressurise the System

  • Look at the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. If the needle has dropped below 1.0 bar, the heating will cut out automatically as a safety feature.
  • Locate the filling loop underneath your boiler (a silver or black flexible braided hose with two small valves).
  • Open both valves slowly. You will hear water entering the system. Watch the gauge closely and close both valves tightly as soon as the needle reaches 1.5 bar.

3. Bleed Cold Radiators

  • If your radiators are hot at the bottom but freezing cold at the top, they have trapped air.
  • Fit a radiator key or a flathead screwdriver into the valve at the top corner of the radiator. Hold a cloth underneath and turn it anti-clockwise slowly.
  • Listen for the air hissing out. The moment water starts to appear, close the valve tightly.
  • Note: Always check your boiler pressure gauge after bleeding, as you may need to top it up using the filling loop.

4. Verify Thermostats & Timers

  • Ensure your wall thermostat is switched on and set to a temperature higher than the current room temperature. If it is battery-operated and the screen is blank, replace the batteries.
  • If you have an immersion heater, verify that the switch is on and the timer program hasn't been altered.

5. Prepaid Meters

  • If you use a prepayment gas or electric meter, ensure you have sufficient credit and haven't slipped into emergency credit mode.
