How to prevent condensation and manage mould growth in your home

Condensation is the most common cause of black mould and happens when moisture from daily activities clings to cold surfaces. You can easily prevent it by keeping your home ventilated, using extractor fans, and wiping down moisture early.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting & Prevention

1. Improve Your Home's Ventilation

  • Open Windows Daily: Open your bedroom and kitchen windows for 10–15 minutes every single morning to let fresh air circulate and clear out overnight moisture.
  • Keep Condition Vents Open: If your windows have small plastic trickle vents at the top, leave them switched to the open position permanently.
  • Use Extractor Fans: Always switch on your kitchen extractor fan when cooking and your bathroom extractor fan when showering. Leave the bathroom fan running for 15–20 minutes after you finish.

2. Reduce Everyday Moisture Build-Up

  • Dry Clothes Carefully: Avoid drying wet washing directly on radiators inside the house unless you have a window open or a dehumidifier running. Drying clothes indoors releases litres of water vapor into the air.
  • Cover Your Pans: Always keep lids on your pots and pans while boiling food to stop steam from filling the kitchen.
  • Wipe Surfaces: If you notice water droplets pooling on your window sills or bedroom walls in the morning, wipe them down immediately with a dry cloth.

3. Tackle Early Mould Growth

  • Pull Furniture Back: Keep your wardrobes, sofas, and beds pushed slightly away from external walls (leave a 2-inch gap) so air can flow behind them.
  • Clean Spots Early: If you see small black mould dots appearing around window frames or bathroom grout, clean them away instantly using a specialist anti-mould spray or a solution of white vinegar and water.
