How to clear blocked sinks, baths, toilets, and drains

Most common blockages can be cleared quickly using a plunger, boiling water, or a drain snake. Tenants are expected to try these basic steps before requesting a contractor visit.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

For Sinks, Baths & Shower Drains

  1. Clear Surface Debris: Remove any visible hair, soap scum, or food waste from the plug hole or drain cover.
  2. Use a Plunger: Place a standard plunger over the drain to form a tight seal and pump firmly up and down to dislodge the clog.
  3. Dissolve grease or soap buildup: Pour a dedicated drain-cleaning solution down the plug hole. Alternatively, use a mix of baking soda and white vinegar, followed by a kettle of boiling water.
  4. Clean the U-Bend (Sinks Only): Place a bucket beneath the sink, carefully unscrew the plastic U-bend trap underneath, clear out any packed debris, and screw it back on tightly.

For Toilet Blockages

  1. Plunge the Bowl: Place a toilet plunger into the bowl, ensuring the rubber cup creates an absolute seal around the bottom opening, and pump vigorously.
  2. Use a Toilet Auger: If plunging fails, gently feed a plumbing snake (auger) down the pipe to break up deeper clogs.
  3. Avoid Misuse: Do not flush too much toilet paper at once, and never flush wet wipes, sanitary items, paper towels, or nappies down the toilet.

For Washing Machine Drains

  1. If water backs up into your kitchen sink while the machine runs, check the wastewater pipe for kinks or clogs.
  2. Open the small access panel at the bottom front of your washing machine, place a towel down, unscrew the drain filter, and rinse away any trapped lint, debris, or coins.

⚠️ Important Notice on Fees: If you request a maintenance visit and an attending contractor discovers the blockage was caused by tenant misuse (such as flushed wipes or food buildup), you may be held responsible for the cost of the call-out fee.
