How to reset a tripped fuse box and troubleshoot power issues
If your electrical sockets or lights suddenly lose power, it is usually caused by a faulty appliance tripping a circuit breaker. You can easily reset this yourself by flipping the correct switch back up in your fuse box.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
- Locate Your Fuse Box: Find your consumer unit (fuse box), which is typically in the hallway, an under-stairs cupboard, or next to the front door.
- Identify the Tripped Switch: Look across the row of switches. If one of the switches has flipped downward into the "Off" position, that circuit has tripped.
- Reset the Switch: Flip the fallen switch back up into the "On" position.
- Isolate the Faulty Appliance:
- If the switch trips and falls back down instantly, a household device is faulty. Unplug absolutely every appliance on that specific circuit (e.g., toaster, kettle, microwave).
- Reset the fuse box switch again.
- Plug your appliances back in one by one. Whichever appliance causes the switch to trip again is the broken item and must not be used.

- Check Plugs and Bulbs: If only one socket fails, test it with a different device. If a single light fails, attempt to replace the bulb first before reporting a fault.
- Check for Neighborhood Outages: If no switches have tripped but your home is completely dark, look outside to see if neighboring properties are affected, and check your local electricity network provider's website for area power cuts.
